Life

Born in Istanbul in 1856/57 (AH 1273), Mehmet Müştak Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a senior judge (mevali). Mehmet Müştak had four years of schooling, at a primary school (İbtidai Mektebi), and wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.

At about 18, in 1875/76, Mehmet Müştak began work in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Tripoli (Trablusgarp), paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1878, places Mehmet Müştak in Bayburt as a tithe official (Aşar Memuru). The last post was in Artvin (Livane) in 1878/79.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1878, as Aşar Memuru in Bayburt, when 17 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1878/79.
