Life#
Born in Trabzon in 1882/83 (AH 1300), Mehmet Celaleddin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1902/03, at about 19, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1903/04, with Mehmet Celaleddin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Thessaloniki (Selanik). The last post was in Shkodër (İşkodra) in 1906/07.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to 350 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Shkodër, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less.
