Life#
Born in Trabzon in 1881/82 (AH 1299), Mehmet Tahir Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Tahir also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 21, in 1903/04, Mehmet Tahir began work in Trabzon, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1905/06, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Mehmet Tahir in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Giresun.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Giresun, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 9,000 kuruş, 61 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
