Born in Ürgüp in 1887/88 (AH 1305), Süleyman Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Süleyman also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Ürgüp in 1901/02, at about 14, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1905/06 and 1906/07, place Süleyman in Ürgüp, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Ürgüp, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
