Mehmet Nazif was born in Ürgüp in 1887/88 (AH 1305) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Nazif also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 15, in 1902/03, Mehmet Nazif began work in Ürgüp, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1904/05 and 1905/06, place Mehmet Nazif in Ilgın as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1904/05, as Muhabere Memuru in Ilgın, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
