Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1888/89 (AH 1306) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Celaleddin Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Mehmet Celaleddin had 12 years of schooling, at the Imperial School (Mekteb-i Sultani), and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Beyoğlu in 1905/06, at about 16, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1905/06 to 1907/08 places Mehmet Celaleddin in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Beyoğlu.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1905/06 to 250 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Beyoğlu, when 15 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 8,400 kuruş, 57 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
