Life

Mehmet Emin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1884/85 (AH 1302) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a finance official (maliye memuru). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Mehmet Emin also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Mehmet Emin began work in Beyoğlu in 1905/06, at about 20, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1905/06, places Mehmet Emin in Beyoğlu as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The last post was in Sirkeci in 1906/07, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru).

Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1905/06 to a peak of 340 in 1906/07, as Posta Memuru in Sirkeci, when 35 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
