Life

Born in Istanbul in 1883/84 (AH 1301) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hasan Hüsnü Efendi was the child of a senior army captain (kolağası). Hasan Hüsnü had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

At about 20, in 1904/05, Hasan Hüsnü began work in Beyoğlu, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1905/06, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Hasan Hüsnü in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Beyoğlu.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 100 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Beyoğlu, when 2 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 3,600 kuruş, 24 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
