Life#
Born in Ürgüp in 1876/77 (AH 1293), Mehmet Tevfik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 13, in 1888/89, Mehmet Tevfik began work in Konya, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Mehmet Tevfik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ürgüp, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1900/01. The last posts were in Ereğli from 1901 to 1903 and Nevşehir in 1903/04, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1901/02.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 720 in 1903/04, as 2. Müdür in Nevşehir, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
