Life

Born in Istanbul in 1878/79 (AH 1296), Sabri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Sabri had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Istanbul in 1898/99, at about 19, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1901/02 and 1902/03, place Sabri in Beyoğlu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 100 kuruş a month in 1901/02, as Muhabere Memuru in Beyoğlu, when 1 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
