Life#
Born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1875/76 (AH 1292), İsmail Hakkı Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a postal official (posta memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İsmail Hakkı also wrote Turkish and spoke French.
At about 13, in 1887/88, İsmail Hakkı began work in Thessaloniki, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 13 or younger. Every annual entry from 1889/90 to 1903/04 places İsmail Hakkı in the same office, accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), in Thessaloniki, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 460 in 1898/99, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Thessaloniki, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 15 years the salaries add up to 57,960 kuruş, 64 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
