Life#
This official was born in Turhal in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an imam. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); the official also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Work began in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1892/93, at about 25, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with the official as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Thessaloniki, where the entries run to 1900/01. The official then moved to Izmir (İzmir), Istanbul, Gebze and Thessaloniki, four places in five years, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1904/05. The last post was in Kosova in 1907/08, with a rise to Mandapost Memuru.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 800 in 1907/08, as Mandapost Memuru in Kosova, when four in five paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
