Life#
Born in Antalya in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Sabri Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). At about 13, in 1888/89, Mehmet Sabri began work in Antalya, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for eight years or longer. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Mehmet Sabri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Antalya, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1902/03. The last posts were in Mytilene (Midilli) from 1903 to 1906 and Antalya again in 1906/07.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 400 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Antalya, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07. Mehmet Sabri probably has an entry in "1879-1909 tarihli Sicil-i Ahval kayıtlarına göre Antalya doğumlu memurlar" by OZAN CAN AKPINAR (2017) (the name, the birthplace and a place of service agree). An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl Defterlerine göre Antalyalı memurlar (1879-1909)" by MEHMET FATİH DEMİRDAŞ (2019) probably refers to Mehmet Sabri, since the name, the birthplace and a place of service agree.
