Life#
Born in Antalya in 1878 (AH 1295), Zülfikar Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). At about 21, in 1899/1900, Zülfikar began work in Antalya, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 350 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1900/01, places Zülfikar in Çanakkale as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The last posts were in Ioannina (Yanya) and Shëngjin (Şengin) from 1902 to 1907 and Aydın in 1907/08, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1905/06.
The salary went from 350 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to 800 in 1907/08, the peak, as Merkez Memuru in Aydın, when four in five paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08. An entry in "1879-1909 tarihli Sicil-i Ahval kayıtlarına göre Antalya doğumlu memurlar" by OZAN CAN AKPINAR (2017) probably refers to Zülfikar, since the name and the birthplace agree. Zülfikar probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl Defterlerine göre Antalyalı memurlar (1879-1909)" by MEHMET FATİH DEMİRDAŞ (2019) (the name and the birthplace agree).
