Life#
Born in Tosya in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Osman Nuri Efendi was the child of a lieutenant or candidate official (mülazım). Osman Nuri had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 27, in 1899/1900, Osman Nuri began work in Kastamonu, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 350 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1900/01, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Osman Nuri in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Çanakkale.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 350 kuruş a month in 1900/01, as Muhabere Memuru in Çanakkale, when one in four paid officials earned less. In all, six years of salary come to 25,200 kuruş, 72 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Defterleri'ne göre Tosyalı memurlar (1879-1909)" by BETÜL MERVE HAMAMCI (2022) probably refers to Osman Nuri, since the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree.
