Life#
Mehmet Haşim Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Haşim began work in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From 1889/90 to 1906/07 every annual entry places Mehmet Haşim in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the Muhasebe Kalemi, from 1892/93 as a registry clerk (Mukayyit) and from 1896/97 in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi).
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 375 in 1904/05, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, when 34 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 18 years the salaries add up to 48,600 kuruş, 45 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
