Life#
Born in Konya in 1854/55 (AH 1271), Mehmet Kemal Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Mehmet Kemal had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Gümüşhane in 1876/77, at about 21, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Mehmet Kemal in Gümüşhane as an official (Memur). Next came Aksaray in 1877/78, as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur). The lists have no entry for 1878 to 1889. From 1889 to 1894 the annual entries place Mehmet Kemal in Damascus (Şam).
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 450 in 1877/78, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Aksaray, when 34 per cent of paid officials earned less.
