Life#
This official was born in Jableh (Cebele) in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); the official also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in Jableh in 1881/82, at about 10, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. Only 33 of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 10 or younger. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places the official in Jableh, the birthplace, as Muvassil, where the entries run to 1891/92. Next came Baniyas (Banyas) from 1892 to 1909, with a rise to sergeant (Çavuş) in 1895/96. In 1909/10 the lists place the official in Latakia (Lazkiye).
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 300 in 1908/09, the peak, as Çavuş in Baniyas, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 22 years the salaries add up to 63,180 kuruş, 50 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
