Life#
Tanaş Efendi was born in Edirne in 1858/59 (AH 1275), into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Tanaş also attended the telegraph school, and wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1875/76, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1877/78, with Tanaş as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Chirpan (Çırpan). Next came Kangal and Keşan from 1878 to 1883, then Uzunköprü (Cisr-i Ergene) from 1883 to 1890. The annual lists then follow Tanaş back to Edirne, the birthplace, from 1890 to 1892, then Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa), Alexandroupoli (Dedeağaç) and Enez (İnoz) from 1893 to 1901, with a rise to Muhabere Memuru in 1893/94. The last posts were in Karaağaç from 1901 to 1903. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 475 in 1901/02, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Karaağaç, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1902/03; the list of 1903/04 (AH 1321) gives the status word Vefat (death).
