Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1854/55 (AH 1271), Artin Resimciyan Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father's occupation was "Ressam". Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi); Artin Resimciyan also attended the telegraph school, and wrote Armenian and French.
Work began in Istanbul in 1868/69, at about 14, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1871/72 to 1894/95 places Artin Resimciyan in Beyoğlu, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1892/93 in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi).
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to a peak of 750 in 1876/77, as Muhabere Memuru in Beyoğlu, when 63 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 25 years the salaries add up to 185,400 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1894/95; the list of 1895/96 (AH 1313) gives the status word Vefat (death). Artin Resimciyan probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre İstanbul doğumlu Ermeni devlet adamları" by HARUN TUNCA (2016) (the name and the birthplace agree).
