Life#
Ahmet Efendi was born in Ortahisar in 1822/23 (AH 1238), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Genisea (Yenice-i Karasu) in 1852/53, at about 30, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Few began so late; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 30 or older. The first annual entry, for 1852/53, places Ahmet in Genisea as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last post was in Ioannina (Yanya) in 1853/54, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
