Life#
Mehmet Reşat Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Reşat began work in Yemen in 1877/78, at about 16, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1877/78, with Mehmet Reşat in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) in Yemen. The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1885 to 1894. The farthest post, Yemen, lay about 3,200 km from Istanbul, and fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
