Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290), Mehmet Daver Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a customs official (rüsumat memuru). Mehmet Daver had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 14, in 1886/87, Mehmet Daver began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1889/90, places Mehmet Daver in Xanthi (İskeçe) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1892/93. The last posts were in Edirne from 1893 to 1902.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 500 in 1901/02, as Muhabere Memuru in Edirne, when half the paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1901/02.
