Life#
Born in Lubnan in 1878 (AH 1295), Yusuf Tama Efendi came from the Maronite Christian (Maruni) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Yusuf Tama had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi), and wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
Work began in Baakline (Baaklin) in 1894/95, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1897/98, to 1899/1900, every annual entry places Yusuf Tama in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Beirut (Beyrut).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1897/98, as Muhabere Memuru in Beirut, when one in ten paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 7,200 kuruş, 40 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1899/1900.
