Life#
Born in Bursa in 1852/53 (AH 1269), this official came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); the official also attended the telegraph school.
The official began work in Istanbul in 1868/69, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 350 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1871/72, with the official as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Bursa, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1874/75. The official then moved to Söğüt and Gemlik from 1875 to 1881, then back to Bursa from 1881 to 1887. The annual lists then follow the official to Gemlik and Karaburun from 1887 to 1890, then Soufli (Sofulu) from 1890 to 1895. The last posts were in Bazla from 1895 to 1898.
The salary went from 330 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to 600 in 1888/89, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Karaburun, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 28 years of salary come to 168,300 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1897/98.
