Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi was the child of a postal official (posta memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 14, in 1888/89, Hüseyin Hüsnü began work in Medina (Medine), paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1888/89, with Hüseyin Hüsnü as a deliverer (Müvezzi) in Medina, where the entries run to 1898/99. The last posts were in Hicaz from 1899 to 1902 and Medina again from 1902 to 1904, with a rise to central office official (Merkez Memuru) in 1899/1900. Hicaz, about 2,400 km from Istanbul, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 500 in 1899/1900, as Merkez Memuru in Hicaz, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
