Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1850/51 (AH 1267) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mustafa Hulusi Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Hulusi also attended the telegraph school.
At about 18, in 1869/70, Mustafa Hulusi began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1873/74, places Mustafa Hulusi in Adana as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Samsun from 1876 to 1880, then Trabzon from 1882 to 1888. For 1880 to 1882 the lists have no entry. The last posts were in Erzincan from 1888 to 1892. A career like this is rare; fewer than 10 per cent of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title throughout.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to a peak of 500 in 1876/77, as Muhabere Memuru in Samsun, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1891/92.
