Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1856/57 (AH 1273), Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Hüseyin Hüsnü also wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of Arabic and Persian.
Work began in Istanbul in 1873/74, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1877/78 to 1888/89 places Hüseyin Hüsnü in the same office, accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 500 in 1886/87, the peak, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, when 42 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 13 years of salary come to 52,440 kuruş, 64 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1888/89; the list of 1889/90 (AH 1307) gives the status word Vefat (death).
