Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1868/69 (AH 1285), Osman Nurettin Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a colonel (miralay). Osman Nurettin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1882/83, Osman Nurettin began work in Sivas, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1887/88, places Osman Nurettin in Sivas as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1891/92. The annual lists then follow Osman Nurettin to Çemişgezek from 1892 to 1897. The last posts were in Svilengrad in 1897/98 and Giresun from 1899 to 1901.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to 540 in 1899/1900, the peak, as Sef in Giresun, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1900/01.
