Life#
Born in Ankara in 1854/55 (AH 1271), Pakalarakliyan Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a postal official (posta memuru). Pakalarakliyan had four years of schooling, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi), and wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
Work began in Trabya in 1875/76, at about 20, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 125 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1876/77, with Pakalarakliyan as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Tarabya, where the entries run to 1885/86. Next came Çanakkale and Izmir (İzmir) from 1886 to 1889. The last posts were in Mytilene (Midilli) from 1889 to 1892.
Pay rose from 125 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 600 in 1889/90, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Mytilene, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 17 years the salaries add up to 73,200 kuruş, 68 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1891/92.
