Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmed Canib Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Mehmed Canib had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of French, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 20, in 1888/89, Mehmed Canib began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From 1889/90 to 1900/01 every annual entry places Mehmed Canib in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as an official (Memur), from 1900/01 in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi).
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to 300 in 1899/1900, the peak, as Memur in Istanbul, when 18 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 12 years the salaries add up to 23,880 kuruş, 33 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. After the last annual entry, for 1900/01, the list of 1901/02 (AH 1319) gives the status word Vefat (death).
