Life#
Ahmet Hilmi Efendi was born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a sergeant (çavuş). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 10, in 1882/83, Ahmet Hilmi began work in Aleppo, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Few began so young; 33 of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 10 or younger. From 1887/88 to 1896/97 every annual entry places Ahmet Hilmi in Aleppo, the birthplace, first as a registry clerk (Mukayyit), from 1890/91 as a postal official (Posta Memuru) and from 1892/93 as a chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru).
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to 600 in 1892/93, the peak, as Başmuhabere Memuru in Aleppo, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1896/97.
