Life

Levon Mısırlıyan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290), into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi). Levon Mısırlıyan knew four languages, English, French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, all in writing, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.

At about 14, in 1886/87, Levon Mısırlıyan began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1887/88 and 1888/89, place Levon Mısırlıyan in Büyükdere as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 285 kuruş a month in 1887/88, as Muhabere Memuru in Büyükdere, when one in ten paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1888/89.
