Life#
Mehmet Şemsettin Efendi was born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1873/74 (AH 1290), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Şemsettin also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 29, in 1902/03, Mehmet Şemsettin began work in Aleppo, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 5 per cent started at 29 or older. From the first annual entry, for 1904/05, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Mehmet Şemsettin in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Aleppo, the birthplace.
