Life#
Mehmet Rıza Efendi was born in Babadag (Babadağ) in 1874/75 (AH 1291), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Rıza also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Work began in Aleppo (Halep) in 1903/04, at about 29, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 29 or older. The first annual entry, for 1904/05, places Mehmet Rıza in Aleppo as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). From 1905 to 1909 the annual entries place Mehmet Rıza in Hamam.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to 500 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Hamam, when half the paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
