Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Ömer Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Ömer had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Sirkeci in 1886/87, at about 15, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1891/92, with Ömer as a deliverer (Müvezzi) in Sirkeci, where the entries run to 1894/95. Next came a return to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1895 to 1897. The last posts were in Larissa in 1897/98, as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) and Izmir (İzmir) from 1899 to 1901.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 600 in 1897/98, as Seyyar Memur in Larissa, when 73 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 400 kuruş. Over nine years the salaries add up to 28,620 kuruş, 53 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1900/01.
