Mehmet Şükrü Efendi

Mehmet Şükrü Efendi was born in Dagistan in 1842/43 (AH 1258). At about 26, in 1868/69, Mehmet Şükrü began work, on a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1868/69, with Mehmet Şükrü as Vilayet evrak odası mukayyidi and no place named. Alongside, the lists for 1873 to 1876 give a second post, in Urla as Mal Muduru, with a rise to Aşar ve ağnam kâtibi in 1874/75. Mehmet Şükrü then moved to Çeşme and Urla from 1877 to 1900. For 1883 to 1887 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1888/89 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Nakil. The last post was in Çine in 1899/1900. The lists give Infisal for 1875/76, 1878/79 and 1882/83; İstifa (resignation) for 1899/1900 instead of a title. Çeşme, about 1,850 km from Dagistan, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,339 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.

Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to a peak of 600 in 1874/75, in Urla, when 63 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 27 years of salary come to 131,280 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1899/1900.
