Life and register readings
İsmail Hakkı Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290). Work began in 1885/86, at about 13, on a first salary of 80 kuruş. Of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 5 per cent started at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, names İsmail Hakkı as Tophane-i Amire Jurnal Kalemi mülazımı, with no place. The lists give Infisal for 1909/10 instead of a title.
