Life and register readings
Yesari Mehmed Efendi was born in Bursa in 1853/54 (AH 1270) into the İslam community; the father's occupation was "Bursa Asâkir-i zabtiyesi yüzbaşı". At about 15, in 1868/69, Yesari Mehmed began work. The first annual entry, for 1868/69, names Yesari Mehmed as Mulazemet, with no place. For 1872 to 1876 the lists have no entry. In place of a title the lists give Azil (dismissal) for 1881/82.
Pay rose from 20 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to a peak of 120 in 1878, as Mulazemet, when 7 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 102 kuruş. In all, six years of salary come to 4,584 kuruş, 15 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1881/82.
