Life and register readings
Mehmed Şükrü Efendi was born in Diyarbakır in 1857/58 (AH 1274), into the İslam community. Work began in 1878/79, at about 21, on a first salary of 30 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1878/79, with Mehmed Şükrü as Muhasebe kalemi katibi and no place named. The lists have no entry for 1891 to 1893. Mehmed Şükrü then moved to Bitlis from 1897 to 1901. Alongside, the lists for 1902/03 give a second post, in Aydın as Tahsil-i bekaya memuru. The annual lists then follow Mehmed Şükrü to Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1905/06. For 1906 to 1909 the lists have no entry. The last entry, for 1909/10, names Mehmed Şükrü as Tekaüt, with no place.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to 5,400 in 1905/06, the peak, in Baghdad, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 1,800 kuruş.
