Life and register readings

Mehmed Said Efendi was born in Şeyh Musa (Şahsuvar) in 1824/25 (AH 1240). Work began in 1843/44, at about 18. The annual lists begin in 1843/44, with Mehmed Said as Nizamiye askeri and no place named, with a rise to Nahiye müdür vekili in 1866/67 and to district governor (Kaymakam) in 1872/73. The lists have no entry for 1844 to 1854, 1855 to 1864, 1878 to 1880 and 1883 to 1885. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1866/67; Infisal for 1866/67, 1870/71, 1878 and 1887 to 1889; Azil (dismissal) for 1875/76. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 2 per cent of the 8,239 officials have entries spanning 48 years or more.

The salary went from 750 kuruş a month in 1854/55 to 2,250 in 1872/73, the peak, as Kaymakam, when 88 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 1,350 kuruş. Over 17 years the salaries add up to 259,920 kuruş, 3.1 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1888/89.
