Life and register readings

Born in Çerçen karyesi in 1873/74 (AH 1290), Mehmed Zühdü Efendi came from the İslam community; the father's occupation was "ibtidai mektep muallimi". At about 23, in 1896/97, Mehmed Zühdü began work in Istanbul, on a first salary of 320 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Mehmed Zühdü as Kavaid-i Osmaniye muallimi and no place named.

The salary went from 320 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 480 in 1903/04, the peak, as Muallim, when 53 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
