Life and register readings
Born in Kars, Mehmet Hamdi Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Work began in Amasya in 1883/84 (AH 1301). The annual lists begin in 1883/84, with Mehmet Hamdi as Tahrirat Kalemi mülazımı in Amasya. Mehmet Hamdi then moved to Gümüşhacıköy, Amasya and Mecitözü from 1884 to 1891. The lists have no entry for 1886 to 1888. Alongside, the lists for 1890 to 1896 give a second post, in Erbaa as Düyun-u Umumiye Kâtibi. Alongside, the lists for 1895/96 give a second post, in Bafra as Düyun-u Umumiye Kâtibi. The last entry, for 1896/97, names Mehmet Hamdi as Düyun-u Umumiye Memuru vekili, with no place.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1884/85, in Gümüşhacıköy, when 28 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 80 kuruş. After ten years the salary stood below the first, 60 kuruş against 300. Over ten years the salaries add up to 23,280 kuruş, 47 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1896/97.
