Life and register readings
Born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Hristiyan (Rum) community, Kostantin Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). The personnel record dates the first work in Sidirokastro (Demirhisar) to 1901/02, after the first annual entry, on a first salary of 540 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Kostantin as Mekteb-i Sultani öğrencisi in Istanbul, the birthplace. The lists have no entry for 1883 to 1901. The annual lists then follow Kostantin to Sidirokastro in 1901/02. Alongside, the lists for 1901 to 1903 give a second post, in Ayvalık as Kaymakam Muavini. Next came Lemnos (Limni) and Gümüşhacıköy from 1904 to 1910. For 1907 to 1909 the lists have no entry. The last post was in Niksar in 1910/11. The lists give Azil (dismissal) for 1906/07 instead of a title. Five provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 6 per cent of the 6,605 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 540 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to a peak of 1,800 in 1904/05, in Lemnos, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 46,080 kuruş, 2.7 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1910/11.
