Life and register readings
Ohanus Efendi was born in Gaziantep (Antep) in 1847/48 (AH 1264); the father was a merchant (tüccar). At about 18, in 1866/67, Ohanus began work in Aleppo (Halep), on a first salary of 500 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1866/67 to 1896/97 places Ohanus in the same post, Halep Turuk ve Muhabir Komisyonu başkâtibi, in Aleppo. The lists give Vefat (death) for 1896/97 instead of a title.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1866/67 to 3,000 in 1895/96, the peak, in Aleppo, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 24 years of salary come to 336,000 kuruş, 2.8 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
