Life and register readings
Veli Bey was born in Istanbul in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Protestan community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). At about 20, in 1882/83, Veli began work, on a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1882/83, names Veli as Mabeyn-i Hümayun mütercimi, with no place. Alongside, the lists for 1898/99 give a second post, in Mektebi sultani as Almanca muallimi vekili.
