Life and register readings
Born in Bursa in 1854/55 (AH 1271), Nazif Efendi came from the İslam community; the father's occupation was "Hattat". At about 20, in 1875/76, Nazif began work, on a first salary of 475 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, names Nazif as İpsara kazası maliye müdiriyeti, with no place. Nazif then moved to Konya in 1885/86. Alongside, the lists for 1896 to 1899 give a second post, in Novi Pazar as muhâsebeciliğinde. The annual lists then follow Nazif to Mosul (Musul) from 1907 to 1909. Alongside, the lists for 1908 to 1911 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Yemen vilayeti defterdarlığı. Alongside, the lists for 1910/11 give a second post, in Trabzon as Tranzon vilayeti defterdarlığı (işe mübaşeret). The lists give Infisal for 1878 to 1880 and 1896/97; Azil (dismissal) for 1880/81 instead of a title.
The salary went from 475 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to 6,500 in 1908/09, the peak, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 4,500 kuruş. In all, 22 years of salary come to 489,240 kuruş, 4.4 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 7 per cent of the 4,381 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1910/11.
