Life and register readings
Born in Kilis in 1847/48 (AH 1264), Mehmed Lâmi Efendi came from the İslam community; the father's occupation was "Kilis Hüseyin Ağa Camii müderrisi". Mehmed Lâmi began work in Aleppo (Halep) in 1875/76, at about 27, on a first salary of 590 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, places Mehmed Lâmi in Aleppo as Rüşdiye muallim-i evveli, where the entries run to 1889/90.
