Mehmet Esat Efendi

Mehmet Esat Efendi was born in Sarajevo (Saraybosna); the father's occupation was "Aziziye-i Zir kazası kaymakamı". Work began in 1883/84 (AH 1301). The first annual entry, for 1883/84, names Mehmet Esat as Orman Nezareti Meclis Kalemi mülazımı, with no place. Alongside, the lists for 1898/99 give a second post, in Al-Karak as Tahrirat müdür muavini. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Esat to Pljevlja (Taşlıca) from 1904 to 1906. Alongside, the lists for 1905/06 give a second post, in Istanbul as Tahrirat müdürü (İnfisal). Alongside, the lists for 1905 to 1910 give a second post, in Burdur as Tahrirat müdürü. Alongside, the lists for 1909 to 1911 give a second post, in Malatya as Tahrirat müdürü. Alongside, the lists for 1910/11 give a second post, in Mardin as Tahrirat müdürü. Six provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 6,605 officials with a place of service. The farthest post, Al-Karak, lay about 2,050 km from Sarajevo, and fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,339 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.

Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 1,250 in 1909/10, in Malatya, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1910/11.
