Salih Efendi

The life of Salih Efendi began in Antalya in 1849/50 (AH 1266); the father's occupation was "Muytab". Salih began work in Antalya in 1869/70, at about 19, on a first salary of 150 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places Salih in Antalya, the birthplace, as Muhasebe Kalemi mukayyidi, where the entries run to 1871/72. Alongside, the lists for 1871 to 1874 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Mal Muduru. Alongside, the lists for 1873 to 1910 give a second post, in Antalya as Evkaf kâtibi. Alongside, the lists for 1880/81 give a second post, in Elmalı as Kaymakam vekili. The annual lists then follow Salih back to Elmalı from 1895 to 1897. The last entries, from 1897 to 1900, name Salih as Kaymakam vekili, with no place. Entries spanning 42 years are rare, reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 8,239 officials.

The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 607.5 in 1880/81, the peak, in Elmalı, when 73 per cent of paid officials earned less.
